Compelling and informative. This story is based on the twisted, bitter family ties for ranching. The author also takes on PTSD issues for both veterans and sexually abused children. Lead male Dylan is a veteran with survivor's guilt and a drinking problem. Lead female character Charli was emotionally, then sexually abused, addicted to narcotics and set-up for murder when existing in the Neon Slime known as Vegas.The two of them work out their issues without drama. Believable characters, interesting and informative dialogue. Easy to follow story line with enough twists to keep the reader entertained.
Stand-alone series that would make a great bundle.
I may re-read this story and am interested in other works by this author.

You guys, Gambling on a Secret is such a spicy little treat that I was so happy to discover on my bookshelf! On a week when I really was not feeling well and was more than a little stressed out, this book is such a great antidote.
Charli and Dylan are one of those couples that you want to cheer for straight out of the starting gate. When he first drove up to her ranch, all pissed off and damaged, I wanted them to go toe to toe, straight to the bedroom! Sparks were there immediately, and I would have been really irritated if someone else was Charli's intended match.
Charli is a girl with a past, a runaway kid with a history of drugs, who just wants to start up a gorgeous ranch and help out other girls like her. Dylan is a former solider, who wants to be a rancher, but cannot let go of guilt from a service-related tragedy. And somehow they are a match made in heaven.
Of course, starting up a new ranch is no easy feet, especially when Dylan's step-uncle sets his sights on Charli and the ranch. They have to overcome personal battles and some serious threats to thrive, but man, oh, man is it a fun ride.
One of the other elements that made Gambling on a Secret so enjoyable was the town. Colton, Texas has some deep roots, and loads of drama. I do not know if anyone watches the remake of Dallas? I adored Season 1, but miss season 2. Anyway, this book reminded me of the show. It's dramatic, soapy and just oh, so good.
I'm waiting with baited breath to hear more of Ellwood's stories from Colton (PLEASE, let there be more!)

This is the second book by this author that I've read. It started out well and pulled the reader in instantly. The main characters are Dylan and Charli who both are dealing with major issues. Dylan is home after being injured while fighting in Afghanistan. He is drinking his physical and emotional pain away. Just before his injury and last mission, he received a Dear John letter from his wife Brenda telling him she was pregnant with another's baby. Two days later his team was blown up and four of his men died. Dylan feels tremendous guilt over leading his team into a trap.
Charli lost her mom when she was 15 and went to live with her cold hearted grandfather. Full of hurt and hate, she ran away ending up on the streets of Las Vegas. While there she became addicted to cocaine and involved with a dangerous drug dealer. Prison and rehab were in her future. Her grandfather found her and brought her home. Leaving her a fortune when he died, she used some of the money to buy a ranch in Texas.
This ranch was run down and unlivable but she was determined to make it into a working ranch of her own. She took a chance and hired Dylan as her manager, even though he was constantly drunk. She wanted to help him and decided that all he needed was a chance. She was just the woman to give him that chance.
They entered into an agreement and worked hard on the ranch. They become friends and secretly harbor feelings for each other. They both try and deny what they feel, but fail and finally admit it to each other.
Their lives are challenged by family feuds, Dylan's step uncle who wants Charli and her ranch, Dylan's vicious ex wife, and secret pasts.
This book was awesome. The characters were well written and multi-faceted. I was intrigued with what they faced and how they overcame their issues. The action was throughout the book and kept the reader engrossed. The romance was sweet, fun and sexy. I had to fan myself a couple of times reading the loves scenes. The ending was definitely sigh worthy. Ms. Ellwood has made me a reader of cowboy romance stories. I am now hooked. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance. I give this 4 out of 5 books.
Could not put it down..A true Romantic Story Line with great Characters, Love and Suspense with twists and turns that kept my interest ! Loved It !

Gambling On A Secret was a very good book. I loved the characters and felt their pain as the two main characters fought demons from their past. Though I mainly read historical western romance this book grabbed me in the beginning and I couldn't put it down. I'm looking forward to the next two in the series.
